This standards-based unit includes telling time with both digital and analog clocks. The practice includes both creating clocks and writing time. It also includes the important first-grade skill of understanding relating time frames. Students must be able to draw AND identify time to the hour and half hour on both types of clocks. Are your students ready for the challenges of the 21st century? Problem-solving and critical thinking skills are at the very heart of getting our kids ready to navigate the world of today. Teachers need to understand the ways in which students acquire the ability to understand math concepts and develop reasoning skills related to time in order to develop higher-order thinking skills.

Mega Math Practice 1.MD.3 gives your students a lot of practice understanding the concept of time. Young mathematicians not only need to learn how to tell time but to understand the relative amount of time it takes for an event to take place. This is how we encourage higher-order thinking in our young students.

Mega Math Practice can be used as independent practice for skills already taught, homework, or as a class starter. These pages are NOT meant to be used until students need practice with skills that they have already been taught. They should also not take the place of using actual clock manipulatives. The use of manipulatives is also helpful when using these practice pages. Students also need many opportunities to work with time in a variety of situations.

This unit is aligned with the First Grade Common Core Math Standard 1.MD.3:

Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.

This unit includes practice with telling time based on the first-grade standards. I use these pages during our “written math practice” rotation during math workshop/guided math time. These pages can also be used for early finishers or homework during the time that you work with individuals and small groups. There will be more MEGA MATH PRACTICE units to come aligned with the Common Core State Standards.

I have used ‘guided math’ in my classroom for over ten years. I begin my teaching block teaching/spiraling math concepts as a whole group, but most of my math block is devoted to guided practice in small groups followed by independent or small group practice, centers and intervention. I begin my math time every day with a page from my “Number of the Day” series.

I hope that you and your kids enjoy this fun resource. Check out my store for lots of fun math units including my popular Number of the Day units for grades K-Second.
