First grade math review! All standards in the Operations and Algebraic Thinking Domain! Addition and Subtraction fact fluency practice and story problem practice! Distance learning practice! Digital version included compatible with Google Slides & One Drive!
Mermaid Math is a great way for first grade students to review all of the standards in the Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA) domain! It includes fluency practice and story problem solving for each standard! This resources is differentiated to include within 10 and within 20 options for every standard!
I recommend using Mermaid Math as a warm-up math activity, as a bell ringer, as a small-group warm up, as an informal assessment, or as a part of a daily routine!
Each page should take students approximately 5-8 minutes to complete. Each page includes two sections.
- The top section, speedy swimmer is fluency practice. Students should be able to solve each problem within about 20-30 seconds by the end of first grade. For some students they may still be working on building fluency of these strategies, so it is okay for them to use paper and pencil to solve if needed.
- The bottom section, sea solvers, includes story problem practice. Students should work towards building fluency in problem solving by drawing models, pictures and equations to show their thinking. It is important to encourage students to prove their thinking, show their work in more than one way and to label their answers.
Parent/teacher notes are included to explain key strategies that students should be using when solving these problems!
This resource covers all first grade standards in the OA Domain! Key concepts in the practice pages are:
- Addition and subtraction within 10
- Addition and subtraction within 20
- Start unknown, change unknown and result unknown problem structures in fluency practice and story problem practice
- Single and multi-step story problems
- Adding three whole numbers within 20
- Properties of operations (commutative and associative)
- Subtraction as an unknown-addend problem
- Understanding the meaning of the equal sign/balancing equations
A paper PDF version is included AND a Digital Version of the project is included. To access the digital version you can either use Microsoft Power Point where students can save their work as a PDF to submit to their teacher. OR You can also upload the Power Point to Google Slides (or One Drive) to have students submit their work on Google Classroom or via sharing on Google Drive. The digital version includes easy-to-use "type answer here" boxes for students to type their answers!
