What are other teachers saying about this resource?

☝ This standards-based unit includes practice reasoning with shapes and their attributes. Students must be able to distinguish between defining attributes (number of side, corners, etc.) and non-defining attributes (color, size and orientation). Students must also be able to draw and compose shapes with defining attributes. Defining named shapes based on attributes, comparing shapes with similar/different attributes, writing about observations about shapes, and This is how we encourage higher-order thinking in our young students.

Mega Math Practice 1.G.1 gives your students a lot of practice understanding the concept of identifying the attributes of shapes and reasoning with those attributes.

Mega Math Practice 1.G.2 gives your students a lot of practice understanding how to compose shapes and create new shapes. Young mathematicians not only need to learn how to define, but how to create shapes based on their attributes. Students need to be able to create shapes based on their attributes and create them. This is how we encourage higher-order thinking in our young students.

Mega Math Practice 1.G.3 gives your students a lot of practice understanding the partitioning of shapes. Young mathematicians not only need to learn how to define the parts, but how to create divided shapes. This is how we encourage higher-order thinking in our young students.

Mega Math Practice can be used as independent practice for skills already taught, homework, or as a class starter. These pages are NOT meant to be used until students need practice with skills that they have already been taught. They should also not take the place of using actual manipulatives. The use of manipulatives is also helpful WHILE using these practice pages. Students also need many opportunities to work with the measurement of length in a variety of situations.

First Grade Geometry Activities focus on the three first-grade standards:

    ⭐ Geometry 1.G.1:

Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.

    ⭐ Geometry 1.G.2:

Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape.

    ⭐ Geometry 1.G.3:

Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares.
