Description

Flag Day identifying nonfiction text structure reading practice worksheets, central idea, author's purpose, 5th grade, June reading

This resource is unique because it is specifically designed to help students bridge the gap between recognizing text structure and understanding how text structure supports the central idea, author’s purpose and contributes to the overall meaning of the text.

Fully aligned with the Florida B.E.S.T. ELA Benchmark ELA.5.R.2.1, but could be beneficial up to 8th grade and beyond as a Tier 2 and 3 intervention resource. This product provides a scaffold for students to use as they deconstruct complex informational texts. To align with the benchmark above, the following six informational text structures are utilized in this resource:

  • compare and contrast (comparison)
  • sequencing
  • chronological
  • cause and effect
  • problem and solution
  • description

What’s Included?

  • Informational Text Structures Identification Practice: Six concise paragraphs informing about a topic related to the history of the American flag and the Flag Day holiday, that allow students to practice identifying informational text structures. As this benchmark requires, students will connect the author’s purpose, as well as the central idea, to determine how the text structure contributes to the overall meaning of the text.

Why Teachers Will Love this Practice:

  • It Deepens Student Reading Comprehension: Students stop seeing "Cause & Effect" as a vocabulary word and start seeing it as a tool for building a central idea, identifying the author’s purpose and understanding that the structure contributes to the overall meaning of the text.

  • Florida B.E.S.T. Ready: Directly addresses the requirement for students to explain how text structures contribute to the meaning of the text.

  • Tying it all Together: The student practice pages allow students to utilize the checklist to identify the text structure, author’s purpose, central idea and describe how the text structure contributes to the overall meaning of the text.

Perfect For:

  • Whole Group, Tier 1 Instruction
  • Small Group Intervention (Tier 2 or 3)
  • Standardized Test Prep Review/Reteach (F.A.S.T.)
  • Summer School
  • Tutoring
