Description

This is an excel file containing printable materials for use to simulate a very basic Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of DNA.

This is a paper/pencil simulation of RFLP! It does not include animations or directions for the actual manipulation of DNA.

The activity has students analyze the DNA of 7 subjects, then compare those subjects' DNA to three known DNA sources.

Items include teacher directions, student directions, DNA strips to fill in, a simulated gel box to create DNA fingerprints, completed DNA fingerprints for comparison, and answer keys for all materials. This activity doesn't expressly use the functions of Excel, but I used Excel to create the activity because it allows for manipulation of the materials to create your own examples as well.

The preview file is NOT useable as is, but you get the idea of the materials you will get if you purchase the full version, which includes full sized materials, proper directions for the activity, and teacher resources.

I was needing an activity to motivate a student toward doing some research on the use of DNA to solve criminal cases. It was a fun activity.
