NUMBERLESS TASK CARD SORT & SOLVE RESOURCE

Beautiful digital and printable task cards designed to develop more sophisticated reasoning skills and fraction understanding. RECENTLY UPDATED! 25 printable pages and 50 Google Slides.

These cards were designed to SUPPORT a great Numberless Word Problem lesson where students are challenged (okay, forced) to consider the context BEFORE just adding or multiplying the numbers! Figuring out when to multiply or divide fractions is VERY SOPHISTICATED! It helps tremendously to continuously phrase X as "groups of" and division as "how many of these in one of those"

Includes a Year's Worth of Numberless!

  • 1 teaching template (full size numberless problem)
  • 24 numberless problems to sort (Green border)
  • 5 sorting headers
  • 24 cards framed out with blanks for students to use their own values. (pink border)
  • Answer keys to the sort AND visual answer keys for SELF CHECKING EASE!

Google Apps Link

  • The Same 24 numberless stories in Google Slides, beautifully redone.
  • Numbered versions of the questions in Google Apps as well.

“They just add all the numbers! It doesn’t matter what the problem says.”

-said Every Teacher. Ever.

Not anymore!!! A fabulous way to develop THINKING and REASONING skills needed for real success in mathematics. For more problem solving tips, check out the blog. Thank you for exploring math with me! Allow students to use calculators! They need the practice, and it allows them to focus on the REASONING! It may even get them out of the habit of seeing the numbers 21 and 7 as an indication that it MUST be a division problem!

These cards were designed for third and fourth graders, and I have used them as an enrichment activity for second graders. It is also an excellent intervention activity for 5th and 6th grades. There is a blank template page if students wish to make their own trendy context cards. (Fortnite won't be popular forever, right?? RIGHT?? :)

This is a simple math station... with sophisticated results! Leave the cards in cups or baggies and students can reuse repeatedly. There is more buy in and more demonstration of understanding WHEN and WHY you would use subtraction or division. Have students evaluate each other's problems and consider ways of sharing them with the class.

OPTIONAL: Use only addition and subtraction cards early in the year, and level up with X after a few exposures and ÷ much later.

OPTIONAL: Level ups available. This will be too easy for no one.

Thank you for exploring math with me!

I teach SPED, Remedial and on level students. Word problems have been a thorn in my side. I'm not sure why I never thought of this. My district allows our middle schoolers to use calculators so the algorithm is not a problem. Just knowing what they are suppose to do is. Added bonus my evaluation was awesome! :)
