Description

Help students build confidence with fractions using this step-by-step fraction packet designed for math intervention and special education classrooms.

This resource walks your students through fraction skills in a clear, structured progression, starting with understanding fractions and moving toward adding, subtracting, and working with mixed numbers.

Students practice with visual models, scaffolded examples, and guided steps on each page to support understanding and independence.

The packet moves through:

• Understanding fractions
• Equivalent fractions
• Adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators
• Mixed numbers and improper fractions

• Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators
• Mixed number operations
• Fraction review and quiz

This resource works well for upper elementary and middle school math intervention, resource rooms, and students who need additional support with fraction concepts.

Real Classroom Feedback

I created and used this packet with my own high school special education math students who are working to build foundational fraction skills before moving on to higher-level math.

Students shared that they appreciated:

Having the directions written directly on each page so they did not have to remember multiple steps.
• Being able to cut out the instruction boxes and add them to their math journals as reference notes.
• The step-by-step format that helped them stay organized when solving fraction problems.

Understand a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 with 𝘢 > 1 as a sum of fractions 1/𝘣.
Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. Examples: 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8.
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
