Description

This math project is just the thing to teach and practice fractions on a number line and apply that knowledge to a real life activity: planning a birthday party.

  • Easy prep! Just print or assign as an Easel Activity
  • Comprehensive instruction-- many examples are given, step by step
  • Practical application with planning a birthday party

In the Concept and Practice section, there are examples and an explanation of the idea of fractions on a number line as well as a focus on vocabulary. There are a lot of visuals to guide students in understanding fractions as number and opportunities for students to show counting on a number line and to build their own number lines.

In the Application sections, students will have to plan a party based on how many guests they choose. They will have to show how many invitations and how much of the food or drink and materials for the games they choose to have at the party. They will have to show their thinking on a number line. This is a good time to also introduce "improper" fractions as many fractions will be over one whole!
