Description

Are you looking for a fun, hands-on way to practice making equivalent fractions using manipulatives?

This activity will allow your students to use color tiles to solve various fractions puzzles. This will allow students to see equivalent fractions and fractional parts of a group in a way that is easily understandable.

For example:
Create a rectangle using just 12 tiles which is ½ red, ¼ blue, 1/6 yellow, and the rest green.

Once students build the rectangle successfully, they can then color their paper to show their answer. Each question gets a little harder than the previous one in order to differentiate for your students. If you want to have students self-check, have them use the included self-checking QR code cards. My students love this independence.

What's included:

  • 6 pages of problems to complete (12 challenges in all)
  • Digital Google Slides version
  • Printable color tiles
  • QR cards to scan for the correct answers
  • Answer key

Explain why a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 is equivalent to a fraction (𝘯 × 𝘢)/(𝘯 × 𝘣) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole and having like denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.
