Description

This script was written to give ELL/ML students practice reading aloud and uses vocab and sentence structure that Newcomer and Emerging students are likely familiar with it.
In this script the teacher takes her class outside to look for signs of spring and take notes on their note-catcher graphic organizer. The Fresh Readers' Signs of Spring graphic organizer is available separately. It's not essential to students reading & understanding the script, but, going outside and looking for signs of spring would be a nice follow-up activity.
There is some vocabulary that you might want to pre-teach. It's always helpful to have the students repeat after you to say the new vocabulary words. And showing images of the new vocabulary is a great way to help students acquire meaning. Some of the vocabulary in this script are name-brand shoes that are popular with kids, so that could spark fun conversations. It's also an opportunity to teach about the capitalization of proper nouns. You might want to point out to your students that in this script the words sandals, tennis shoes and hiking boots are not capitalized, but the words Nike, Crocks and Converse are capitalized.
