Description

Students sort tables, graphs, equations and ordered pairs into "function" or "relation" Venn categories in this activity. The inner circle of the Venn diagram is where functions go to show that functions are always relations but relations are not always functions.

I have used this algebra activity as an introduction to functions, as a warm up after a lesson on functions and as a closer. The printable version can be glued into an interactive notebook as a lasting reference.

This sorting activity is an excellent resource for helping students visualize the differences between functions and relations. The Venn diagram format is highly intuitive and allows my students to grasp the concept much quicker than using standard worksheets alone. It is well-crafted, standards-aligned, and fits perfectly into my algebra lesson.

Love all the different representations of relations and functions. A few of the equations are a little challenging, but create good conversation.

I use this resource with algebra I students. I like that it forces them to think about all of the qualities of a function given examples they haven't seen yet.

Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output.
Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range) assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. If 𝘧 is a function and 𝘹 is an element of its domain, then 𝘧(𝘹) denotes the output of 𝘧 corresponding to the input 𝘹. The graph of 𝘧 is the graph of the equation 𝘺 = 𝘧(𝘹).
