Description

This Function or Not a Function 8th Grade Math Identifying Functions Fall Activity will keep your students engaged as they practice identifying functions from mapping diagrams, tables, and graphs. They'll graph the relations and color the fall apples to classify the representations as functions or not.

The Fall themed worksheet includes 8 problems, represented by 4 tables and 4 mapping diagrams.

Students are provided with plenty of work space for graphing the (x,y) values in a coordinate plane. Graphing the relations provides practice with using the vertical line test for functions.

This activity goes beyond "function or not" to really help students understand the relationship between inputs and outputs of functions --- If the relation is a function, they'll identify one point that could be added to make it no longer a function. If the relation is not a function, they'll identify one point that could be removed to make it a function.

Students complete the classifying portion of the activity by using their answers as they graph each relation to color the Fall apples. Students may use the colors shown in the answer key (yellow and red) or teachers can identify any 2 colors they'd like students to use when identifying the type of relation:

  • 4 of the problems are functions (2 tables and 2 mapping diagrams)
  • 4 of the problems are not functions (2 tables and 2 mapping diagrams)

An answer key is included.
