Description

Students will learn and practice the steps to conduct genetic recombination in order to solve a real world problem. This is the activity you have been waiting for! Students will choose the correct restriction enzymes, find the correct cut sites to remove the gene, and place the gene fragment in another DNA strand using the same restriction enzymes. Finally they will simulate the effects of DNA ligase bonding the sticky ends with tape. This has it all!

There are two versions included. One for advanced students and one for regular ed students.

I discovered this lab as I searched for new resources to spice up my genetic engineering lesson and I am so happy I did! My students were hooked from the start ("Fish genes in tomatoes?! Gross!") and their engagement level stayed high as they simulated the genetic engineering process. They were able to discuss the real world impact this technology has for feeding our growing population and GMOs in general.

Thank you. Would love to know if there is a specific part / area the students were less engaged.

Great resource. Almost freaked out when I saw the DNA was missing, but I realized they were in another resource. Thanks!

I have made this easier to use by combining the two resources together along with a few other updates. Hope you found the lesson helpful!

I could NOT locate the DNA for the fish, tomato, and bacteria! Was it included? Please respond by sending a text to 6018748690. Thank you!
