Description

DIRECTIONS: For this activity, you will be utilizing probability in the same way as Biologists and Geneticists do in the “Scientific World.” You will be flipping a coin to determine the number of times you flip for heads or flip for tails. This would be considered a ratio. A ratio is a proportion that expresses the magnitude of quantities in relation to one another.

This introductory activity reinforces math skills in the Biology classroom so that students can have a more thorough understanding of probability before introduction to Gregor Mendel and genetics. Students enjoy the activity because it's student centered, but not overwhelming. Depending on ability and class size, students should be able to complete in 30 minutes and the only necessary supplies are pennies! If students cannot finish during class, the analysis questions can become homework!

I loved this activity! I changed the directions slightly...instead of using a coin, I used a plastic circle math counter. I marked one side of the counter with an "A" and the other side with an "a." (I selected the letter A for the word allele). This was just a personal preference because I cannot stand the sound of coins hitting out science lab station countertops; the activity can absolutely be used as written.
