Description

This project is a great way to keep your class engaged just before Winter Break. It's a hands-on approach to reviewing geometry knowledge in a fun, educational way. It is necessary to collect donations of items from families, unless you are able to fund the project on your own. The document includes an outline of the project, time management, teacher tips, list of possible geometric figures to include, a gingerbread house planning page and a family letter explaining the project & the types of donations you will need. My students were always so excited about this project that I had no problem getting more than enough stuff from the families. This is probably one of my favorite projects and the kids LOVE it too!

Great package, however I thought the dollar amount of $10 was too expensive and it lacked a rubric. How are students being assessed on the project? I never created a ginger bread house with my students and the directions were very clear and easy to follow.

Thank you so much for your feedback and I apologize for not including a formal rubric. My team and I complete this project with our students the week before winter break. For us, this is usually the weird time when grades are technically cut off. Our unofficial rubric is the checklist of items (in the packet) that we ask the students to include. Assigning a 1 or 2 point system per item worked for us. Usually our students go above and beyond the requirements--and sometimes it's ok to just let them have some fun--particularly when they're bouncing off the walls ready for break! :) All four 4th grade sections participate in this project and to switch it up we allow students to pick a partner in any class. We then balance out the classrooms and block out about 1-2 hours per day during that final week. If students finished early, they can write a story about their gingerbread house, the family that lives inside, etc. Enjoy + happy holidays!
