Geometric Rotations: No-Prep Notes

This no-prep resource is a great way to introduce students to rotations for the first time! Included is a two sets of three-panel printables of scaffolded notes and examples, perfect for a guided lesson on geometric rotations, as well as a teacher guide and set of completed notes. The student printables are formatted with the intended use in an interactive composition toolkit/notebook, where the page is folded in half and glued in to the notebook, however it can be easily used regardless of whether you are building one of these in your classroom.

The notes cover the definition of a rotation, describing rotations given the pre-image and image on a graph, performing rotations on a coordinate grid, and how to write the algebraic rules for three common rotations (90 degrees, 180 degrees, and 270 degrees counterclockwise around the origin). The first set of notes focuses only on these things for rotations around the origin. The second set of notes extends the lesson to cover rotations of the same degrees around points other than the origin.

This lesson is intended for students that have worked with figures/points on a coordinate grid before, as part of a unit on geometric transformations. The lesson notes and practice examples only cover rotations, so students do not need prior knowledge of other transformations such as translations, dilations, or reflections in order to understand how this works.

This was fantastic. I used it as classroom notes and the students really got to derive the rotation rules themselves. Class participation was very high. I also love you included not only rotation around the origin, but around any point (which I add as an extension for my higher kids).
