Description

The Grade 3, Unit 2: Patterning resource is a 120+-paged unit designed to meet the 2020 Ontario Mathematics curriculum expectations for the Algebra strand. This unit introduces students to what patterns are and focuses on the changing elements of patterns. Students continue to learn that patterns are made up of shapes, objects, materials, numbers, and letters. This unit also focuses heavily on growing and shrinking numeric patterns and making predictions as to what will come next in the pattern. Please note this is a printable resource. There is NO Google Slide component to this resource.

Wonderland Math is a math unit series designed to meet the Ontario 2020 Mathematics curriculum. Each unit features between 8 – 12 lessons. Wonderland Math is hands-on and encourages students to think critically about concepts related to math, such as addition, subtraction, number sense, etc. Let’s take a look at what the Grade 3, Unit 2: Patterning resource includes.

The Grade 3, Unit 2: Patterning resource provides lessons, activities, assessments, and hands-on practice for the following:

  • Identify repeating elements and operations in a variety of patterns
  • Describe repeating elements and operations in a variety of patterns
  • Create and translate patterns that have repeating elements, movements, or operations
  • Use representations for patterns including shapes, numbers, and tables of values
  • Determine pattern rules
  • Use pattern rules to extend patterns
  • Make and justify predictions related to patterns
  • Identify missing elements in patterns that have repeating elements, movements, or operations
  • Create and describe patterns to illustrate relationships among numbers to 1 000

The specific expectations that this unit addresses are as follows:

  • C1.1: Identify and describe repeating elements and operations in a variety of patterns, including patterns found in real-life contexts
  • C1.2: Create and translate patterns that have repeating elements, movements, or operations using various representations, including shapes, numbers, and tables of values
  • C1.3: Determine pattern rules and use them to extend patterns, make and justify predictions, and identify missing elements in patterns that have repeating elements, movements, or operations
  • C1.4: Create and describe patterns to illustrate relationships among whole numbers up to 1 000

This is a nicely packaged unit but I have not used much of it in practice. There is a lot of printing/laminating to do for resources and posters that are only used for a single lesson.
