Description
Use this Guided Notes document, in either Google Sheets online form or printable PDF, to help teach your students how to work with opposite numbers and understand distance on a number line.
Opposite numbers appear on opposite sides of the number line and are the same distance from zero. For example. -5 and 5 both have a distance of 5 from zero. The distance from -5 to 5 is 5 x 2 or 10.
The Guided Notes begin with a real-world example of positive and negative numbers on the number line, using money. It then covers converting positive to negative numbers through multiplying, dividing, subtracting and adding. You can convert 5 to -5 by multiplying it times -1, dividing it by -1, subtracting 10 from it, or adding -10 to it.
There are 16 practice problems. I include a page in this package that has sample number lines should you choose to use them.
You can let the students try solving the practice problems on their own or lead them in one or more. After they have finished, have them do Grade 6 Rational Numbers Check In 7 and Check In 8 and Rational Numbers Worksheet 3.
You can save about 30% on these products with Grade 6 Rational Numbers Lesson 3.
