Description
Teach your high school students to vary their sentence structure with colons! Using colons in their writing can help students elevate their work, but few students truly understand how to use them. This PRINTABLE AND DIGITAL lesson covers using the colon to introduce a list and using a colon to introduce an explanation, detail, or quote.
The included slideshow covers rules for using colons in writing. As the lesson and slideshow progress, students will stop intermittently to complete activities on the included worksheets to practice implementing these colon rules.
The activities on the included worksheets will help students evaluate how to use a colon in a sentence and will provide students with practice using colons in their own writing. Students should be familiar with independent clauses before this lesson.
If students need to review any of the material in this lesson, they can refer back to the included Colons Handout. This reusable handout is a resource that students can use long after this lesson!
Quickly and easily check student understanding along the way with two included exit tickets. These exit tickets will take students just a few minutes and will tell you at a glance who is struggling.
The included lesson plan will guide you through prepping and giving the lesson, and offer some teaching tips and suggestions.
This resource is highly flexible! Teach in person or remotely. Need to modify the worksheets? Customize the editable Google Doc version. Need the exit tickets to grade themselves? Use the Google Forms versions instead! Tweak this resource to suit your needs!
