Description

I created these slides as a supplement to the new HMH Into Math Grade 5 curriculum. I wanted my students to have some more practice with digital manipulatives. These slides can be shared by Google Classroom as an assignment (make a copy for each student) during a warm-up or small group instruction (either independent or teacher-guided). They could also be projected during whole group instruction.

A preview is included as an example of what you can expect in each slideshow.

If you use 5th grade HMH Into Math, you must purchase these. They make my daily life easier. I also assign the slides in my google classroom for students who are not in school or have parents that need help with homework.

Interpret the product (𝘒/𝘣) Γ— 𝘲 as a parts of a partition of 𝘲 into 𝘣 equal parts; equivalently, as the result of a sequence of operations 𝘒 Γ— 𝘲 Γ· 𝘣. For example, use a visual fraction model to show (2/3) Γ— 4 = 8/3, and create a story context for this equation. Do the same with (2/3) Γ— (4/5) = 8/15. (In general, (𝘒/𝘣) Γ— (𝘀/π˜₯) = 𝘒𝘀/𝘣π˜₯.)
Find the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths by tiling it with unit squares of the appropriate unit fraction side lengths, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths. Multiply fractional side lengths to find areas of rectangles, and represent fraction products as rectangular areas.
