Description

Halloween Math Project for Volume—Build a Haunted House

Exploring volume while designing and building haunted houses with a Halloween, haunted house, or Dia de los Muertos theme, keeps students engaged. Students in grades 4-7 learn critical measurement and geometry standards while combining art and math. We have made this project easy to differentiate for your class. Our students were highly motivated to finish their houses so that they could have fun decorating them.

NOTE: If your school does not celebrate Halloween we have you covered! The student handouts are included with Halloween decorations, haunted house only (cute ghosts, spiders, bats), and Dia de los Muertos decorations. Nothing scary!

This project is not just aligned to the Common Core standards, it was created for them.

There are four parts to the project:

•Create nets for rectangular prisms

•Explore and calculate the volume of ten rectangular prism nets using the grids on the nets that measure 1 centimeter square

•Plan and build a haunted house using student selected prisms within a specific volume range and then decorate the houses (nets and blackline decorations are included)

•Plan and build a village using perimeter and area to create yards and fences with unlimited possibilities for a decorated class village

Everything is included making this a print-and-go activity. The first and last part of the project are optional leaving you many choices for how extensive you make this project. It can be done in a couple of days or, if you choose to have the class make a decorated village, a full week. Once their structure is built they can decorate using construction paper, the provided blackline clip art, paste, light candy, glitter, sequins, cotton balls,

pipe cleaners and any light-weight art materials.

This project includes standards 5.MD.3-5, 6.G.2, 6.G.4 and 7.G.6. It makes a great introduction to volume and also provides deep conceptual understanding. Creating a haunted house can also be a fun review if you have already taught volume.

PLEASE NOTE: This is the same project as our Winter Wonderland Volume Project and Gingerbread House Volume Project with different themes.

If you are interested in this project but would like to teach volume in the winter, check out two great options here.

Please download the preview to see how exciting this project will be in your classroom.

Thank you!

My students loved this activity! We have been working hard at learning how to find the volume, and this activity during the week of Halloween was just what they needed to practice what they had learned.
