Description

The Haunted House Ratios and Rates QR Code Activity is the perfect way to engage students with learning, technology, group work, and a mini room transformation for Fall/Halloween should you choose to decorate. This activity allows students to practice calculating ratio and rates with 15 practice problems.

**It now includes an editable version. Questions and answers can be edited by inserting text boxes. You can use this for any subject to review any content/material. The font used is from the Perfect Blend: PBPerfectBrew.**

Print the problems and laminate. Students will need a device that can read QR codes (cell phone, iPad, tablet, laptop/desktop with a camera, etc.).

The activity is designed for students to work in small groups but students can work individually or in partners. Print the problems for each group or hang around the room and students can start at different spots.

Students will solve the problem and record work on the recording sheet. Using the camera on the device, students will scan the QR code card near their answer that will alert them whether they are correct or not. If their answer is correct, I let students pick a treat from the treat basket (candy, pencils, erasers, etc.).

If their answer is incorrect, students need to fix and then do a trick. For the tricks, you will need a small pumpkin, toilet paper roll, a “witches broom”, and some space. See the preview for more details!

Happy teaching!

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. For example, “The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the zoo was 2:1, because for every 2 wings there was 1 beak.” “For every vote candidate A received, candidate C received nearly three votes.”
Understand the concept of a unit rate 𝘢/𝘣 associated with a ratio 𝘢:𝘣 with 𝘣 ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship. For example, “This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is 3/4 cup of flour for each cup of sugar.” “We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of $5 per hamburger.”
Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
