Holiday Math Story Problems! Digital version included compatible with Google Drive & Google Classroom! Engage students in story problem practice through these fun fourth grade math story problems! 4th Grade math multiplication and division practice! Multi-step story problems! Differentiated and aligned to the standards! Holiday math! Christmas math, Kwanzaa math, Hanukkah math, Las Posadas math, Diwali math, Chinese New Year math!
The weeks before and after winter break are very exciting for students as they look forward to, and share stories from their winter holiday celebrations. It can be hard to find math resources that are aligned to the standards and also keep students engaged during this exciting time which is why I made these story problems. The word problems in this resource all lend themselves to visual models and are very helpful for teaching other problem-solving strategies such as labelling and finding the unknown.
The word problems are all about the non-religious traditions at various winter holiday celebrations. Holidays included in the word problems are Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali, Las Posadas and Chinese New Year. Each story problem includes a brief explanation of the holiday.
These word problems are differentiated with three different versions so that you can work on problem solving skills with your students at all levels! Use this simple guide to determine which set of problems is best for each student. Just look for the level icon at the top of each page. Students can work on the level that is appropriate for them or you can have students work their way up through all three levels!
These story problems focus on whole number multiplication and division, as well as addition/subtraction and mixed-operation story problems. It also includes multiplicative compare, measurement conversion and area/perimeter problems. All three levels are aligned to standards 4.OA.A.2, 4.OA.A.3, 4.OA.B.4, 4.NBT.A.3, 4.NBT.B.5, 4.NBT.B.6, 4.MD.A.2, 4.MD.A.3.
- One Candy Cane Level: basic problem-solving skills. Mostly single-step word problems with a few two-step problems. Multiplication of four digit by one-digit numbers. Basic story problem structure with result unknown in most problems. Equal groups and multiplicative compare included. All problems can be solved using concrete visual models.
- Two Candy Cane Level: intermediate problem-solving skills. Single and multi-step word problems. Mixed word problem structure with start unknown, change unknown and result unknown as well as compare problems and missing factor multiplication and multiplicative compare. Bar models, concrete visuals models as well as more abstract models can be used.
- Jingle Bell Level: advanced problem-solving skills. Multi-step word problems. Mixed word problem structures with unknown in all places as well as compare problems, most which require bar models to solve. Missing factor and division problems included. Most multi-step problems are two and three-step problems. Challenging multiplicative compare with some large division problems (5.NBT.B.6) Abstract visual models as well as variables should be used to solve these problems.
This resource works great during math centers, independent practice, small groups or even for distance learning!
