Description
Looking for an easy way to help students learn how to outline a textbook section? This product will help you and your students!
Textbooks are a useful tool in nearly every class as they provide important information, definitions, good visuals, and examples. While textbooks can be very useful, they can also be difficult to read, understand, and comprehend. My first year teaching Freshman students, I found that many of them were at elementary reading levels, which made reading a high school textbook an understandable struggle!
Outlining a section of the textbook is a good way for the students to condense the reading into only the most important material. However, many students struggle with outlining, as it is a skill that requires them to organize and summarize the material. Outlining is easier when a specific format is used. I designed this handout for my students to use as they outlined their textbooks. They had no idea how to outline at first, but they learned this format quickly!
This product includes:
1. A ready to print student handout with an outlining format.
2. Sample pages from an online textbook. (I chose a Life Science textbook as the example, but the outlining format can be applied to all subjects for middle and high school textbooks.) I color-coded the parts of the textbook to help students with textbook terminology (such as heading, subheading, etc.).
3. An EXAMPLE of an outline which is color-coded to the textbook sample. I also included a copy of the example in black and white, so that it can be copied easily.
As always, please view the preview and ask any questions before purchasing. Thank you! We hope that you find this product to be useful! HAPPY OUTLINING!

I was struggling to remember how to properly outline a textbook section, as it had been over a decade since I'd done it myself. I wanted to put more college-prep and literacy into my biology class, and this really helped to organize our process. Once the kids had this process down, I was able to let them make the outlines their own as we got further into the year.
This is so great! Your feedback put a smile on my face! I'm so glad it helped you and your students! Thanks for the feedback, Miss Kassy's Kabinet! We appreciate it!
Helpful for students who had difficulty with organizing their ideas.
I got this resource so I could give my students another option for organizing their thoughts. I found it useful. Thank you very much
