As the nation was reconstructing after the Civil War, various viewpoints arose as to how newly freed slaves would be incorporated into society. Two prominent men in this debate, Booker T. Washington and WEB DuBois, had differing viewpoints about how African Americans would achieve the equality granted to them in the 14th Amendment. This assignment requires students to identify the differing views of Washington and DuBois and apply this information while analyzing quotes from each man.

Students will use their knowledge of Robber Barons/Captains of Industry to identify the source of various quotes. Students will analyze the quote to determine its meaning and then apply known information about Robber Barons/Captains of Industry to determine who said each quote.
