Description

IB PYP How We Express Ourselves – Media Literacy & Marketing Inquiry Unit (Grades 3–6)

In today’s world, children are surrounded by advertising from every direction — TV, social media, online videos, billboards, and more. This complete IB PYP “How We Express Ourselves” unit of inquiry gives students the tools to think critically about how media impacts our thinking, influences decisions, and shapes behaviour.

This 90+ page transdisciplinary, hands-on unit engages learners through concept-based inquiry into the forms, functions, and influence of media. It’s designed for the IB Primary Years Programme but is easily adaptable for Grades 3–6 in any inquiry-based or constructivist classroom.

Guided by the key concepts of form, perspective, and causation, this unit supports the development of the PYP Learner Profile and ATL skills while integrating literacy, maths, arts, and design.

Central Idea:
Media influences our thinking and decision-making.

Lines of Inquiry:

  • Different forms of media
  • How the media influences us
  • Influence as a powerful tool in marketing

What’s Included:

  • Prepared posters with varied media advertising examples
  • Exploration of advertising techniques (hype, endorsement, call to action, etc.)
  • Interactive notebook activities to develop literacy skills
  • Geometry lessons integrated with product design and packaging
  • Reading and writing activities linked to media and marketing
  • Hands-on experiments to explore the design process
  • Provocations to spark curiosity and discussion
  • Summative assessment: design a physical product, develop a marketing campaign, and present to a target audience
  • Cross-curricular activities connecting STEAM, language, and social studies

Perfect for:

  • IB PYP “How We Express Ourselves” theme
  • Media literacy and marketing inquiry projects
  • Concept-based, constructivist classrooms

A great resource filled with so many ideas. As a newer PYP teacher, I really find the way Susan integrates all the elements of IB into her units very helpful and practical.

I love all of Susan's stuff. I've been able to purchase a lot of her inquiry units and modify them for the younger years. The media material is definitely for the upper grades. I would love to see you make some of the units for K-2! Thanks!

Thank you so much for your feedback! I’m in the process of developing some resources for those earlier years kiddos. Without experience personally, I’ve had to recruit help. :)) Hopefully, these will be coming soon.
