Description

Inquiry based math offers collaborative learning and hands on inquiry requiring the children to solve problems, think critically as they have to measure the school, calculate area and perimeter, design a playground, find out the population of the school and which grade has the most students and so much more! The children have to research another school in a foreign country, looking at facts within each country and comparing both the country and the schools to their own school. They will have to interview administrative staff in order to research specific areas of their school and record their data in a way that can easily be presented to others. It culminates in a class presentation of the facts found . Wholly differentiated, ( Task A cards are less challenging) you can use it as an assessment tool of the skills and standards included. It can be created as a booklet or in a binder., with a front cover included, being used as a goal setting pre assessment for the children. Mix and match the pages to suit your students’ needs.

This inquiry based math packet is easy to print and go, perfect for back to school or all year round. I designed it for my IB PYP 5th grade class. It can be used 4th – 6th grade too. The inquiry is largely math based and is all about “Our School”. You will find the following skills and standards ideally suited for the IB PYP Phase 4 and CCSS Math for 4th and 5th grade:

Number sense and base ten operations

This was one of the first inquiry units I did with my class so they could get an understanding at the start of the school year about what inquiry is. The unit was engaging and simple to follow. A must for anyone just starting out in PYP.
