Description

This bundle includes three engaging activity sets to take you from start to finish in teaching your students what types and traits of characters are and how to identify them in a meaningful context.

The activity sets included are. . .

  1. Character Discovery Learning Activity
  2. Identifying Characters Lesson Set
  3. Identifying Characters Graphic Organizers

More information. . .

  • Kick off your unit with a discovery learning activity to get students interested in the unit, activate their background knowledge, and guide them to construct a basic understanding of the concept on their own.
    • Throughout the activity, students think critically about how we connect/relate to characters, what traits they have, and how they impact a story. Students first think of celebrities/important figures that made an impact on them in real life by thinking about who they would like to meet and listing their traits. Then, they relate this to characters in books with discussion prompts and questions. Then, as a bonus activity, students can think more about traits and the effect they have by picking different characters to help them in various situations and explaining why.

  • After students construct their own knowledge, clarify and solidify their understanding with a direct instruction lesson set.
    • The lesson set starts with a presentation about what types/traits of characters are and how to identify them. The presentation also has doodle notes for students to follow along. Then, there's a scaffolded practice packet where students identify types and traits of characters and have a color-coded handout to guide them. Finally, there's two quizzes where students answer knowledge-level questions directly from the slides/notes, then determine either types or traits of characters for two passages on their own.

  • After your students have the information, let them practice their skills individually or in small groups with a set of differentiated graphic organizers.
    • You can use these graphic organizers with ANY text to guide students through the thinking process of identifying types and traits of characters. This set has 5 graphic organizers to allow you to differentiate for all your students’ current levels of understanding. This is a perfect small group instruction activity or independent formative assessment.
