Description

This set includes everything needed for direct instruction on identifying types of characters and character traits. . .

  • A presentation with thorough, but concise, information about characters--including vocab like protagonist/antagonist, supporting characters, round/flat, dynamic/static, physical/personality traits, and direct/indirect characterization--and steps to take to identify these types of characters and their traits.
    • Checkpoints titled “Wait, so what did that mean?” are included where students have a short discussion/writing time to check their understanding and interact with the information.

  • Creative, engaging doodle notes that follow the presentation notes.
    • Doodle notes are scaffolded with interactive blanks and follow the presentation almost exactly to avoid confusion (lines/slides that are not included are in gray.) Words in the presentation that correspond to blanks on the notes are in different colors.

  • Color-coded handouts listing the steps of identifying types of characters and character traits to be given to students with doodle notes for help on the practice (minimal color to conserve ink--you can also print in grayscale)

  • A practice packet with three different passages labelled for guided practice, partner practice, and independent practice
    • All passages, along with a slide for going through the steps together and a slide with possible answers for each, are also included on the presentation.

  • TWO quizzes where students answer knowledge-level questions directly from the slides/notes, then fill out a chart to either (1) identify types of characters or (2) identify character traits. (Answer keys included for teacher use.)
    • Quiz #1 is all about types of characters and Quiz #2 is all about character traits.

This activity set provides instruction, scaffolded practice, and assessment that is engaging, conceptual, and comprehensive so you can explicitly, uncomplicatedly guide your students to a thorough understanding of types of characters/character traits and how to identify them!
