Description
How did the Inca build the largest empire in the Americas without horses, wheels, or written language? In this interactive 2–3 day Inca civilization lesson, students predict how a mountain empire could function, sketch engineering solutions for moving massive stones, design their own quipu record-keeping system, and debate life inside the Inca social hierarchy.
Print-and-go Inca civilization lesson with interactive slides, guided notes, and built-in activities.
This lesson uses interactive slides with frequent pauses for short discussions, quick sketches, and design challenges so students stay involved while building their notes. The resource includes an editable Google Slides presentation (or Canva link), guided notes that organize key information, and detailed speaker notes explaining Inca engineering, agriculture, medicine, and imperial government.
Activities built into the lesson
- Mountain Engineering Challenge
Students sketch or describe how the Inca could move and shape massive stones without wheels or metal tools. - Quipu Design Challenge
Students create a simple knot system to record information and experience the challenge of record keeping without writing. - Bridge Decision Poll
Students consider whether they would cross an Inca rope bridge while carrying supplies and discuss the demands of mountain travel. - Social Class Debate
Students debate which Inca social class they would choose to live in and what that reveals about Inca society. - Social Mobility Movement Game
Students physically move around the room to experience how difficult it was to move up in the Inca class system.
