Integer and Rational Number Operations Homework/Practice Worksheet
Share

Description

This resource can be used as in-class practice, homework, or an additional worksheet for reinforcement of integer and rational number operations. I use this as homework in my class after I teach lessons on Integer Operations (Mult. & Div. and Add. & Sub.) and Rational Number Operations.

I do not allow students to calculators in this unit and require them to show me the work by hand. After testing this unit, calculators are allowed the rest of the year even on these types of problems in spiral review (I find that to be a good time to teach them how to use the fraction and operation buttons on the calculators).

A teacher copy of the worksheet is included. The practice/worksheet can be hole punched and placed right into a student's binder or copied at 70 - 75% to create a size that would fit into a composition sized interactive notebook.

Understand 𝘱 + 𝘲 as the number located a distance |𝘲| from 𝘱, in the positive or negative direction depending on whether 𝘲 is positive or negative. Show that a number and its opposite have a sum of 0 (are additive inverses). Interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
Understand subtraction of rational numbers as adding the additive inverse, 𝘱 – 𝘲 = 𝘱 + (–𝘲). Show that the distance between two rational numbers on the number line is the absolute value of their difference, and apply this principle in real-world contexts.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract rational numbers.
