Description
Linear Transformations, TEKS Aligned: A3E
The front of the double-sided notes page is a one-page discovery notes page on transforming the linear parent function. The student uses their graphing calculator to discover what changing m and b does to the parent graph. Then they are given equations and asked to predict what the changes will be and check their predictions on the calculator. Finally, they are asked to write the equation of a line that would create the changes indicated.
The back is a set of guided practice notes where the student graphs the transformations by hand. The student uses a pencil and two other colored pencils or pens. They graph the parent function 6 times (6 examples) and then each example walks them through a transformation or two. Finally, they write the equation of the resulting line. 2 pages. Key included.
The double-sided practice sheet is designed to develop the idea of transforming one line into another by changing either the slope, y-intercept or both.
The first set of questions serve to show that lines with the same slope can easily be transformed into one another simply by adding or subtracting. The second set of questions serve to show that lines with the same y-intercept can be transformed into one another by changing the slope. Finally, on the back the student is given 5 lines, asked to write the equation of each one, then given a series of questions on transforming one of the lines into the other. These questions are in chart format and the first two are done for them as examples. Key included.
