Description

MHF4U Culminating Task – Advanced Functions (Ontario Grade 12)

Bring your course full circle with this comprehensive, curriculum-aligned culminating task designed specifically for the Ontario Grade 12 Advanced Functions (MHF4U) course. This rich performance task challenges students to demonstrate mastery of key concepts while making meaningful connections between multiple function families.

THEME : Hiking the Salkantay Trail in Peru to Machu Pichu

This document is a 27 Page PDF.

1) The task is split into 2 days :

Day 1 (Polynomial and Rational Functions)

Day 2 (Trigonometric and Logarithmic Functions)

Full solutions are provided.

In this engaging summative project, students apply their understanding of:

  • Polynomial functions (including transformations, factoring, end behaviour, and modelling)
  • Rational functions (restrictions, asymptotes, and real-world applications)
  • Trigonometric functions (sinusoidal modelling, amplitude, period, phase shift, and transformations)
  • Logarithmic functions with a focus on half-life and exponential decay models

Students will analyze, model, and justify solutions using algebraic reasoning, graphical interpretation, and clear mathematical communication. The task encourages higher-order thinking, problem-solving, and real-world application — making it an ideal final evaluation for MHF4U.

What’s Included:

✔️ Detailed student task sheet
✔️ Clear success criteria & marking rubric (aligned with Ontario Achievement Chart categories: Knowledge & Understanding, Thinking, Communication, Application)
✔️ Teacher - Answer Key
✔️ A copy with no marking scheme and a version with a Marking Scheme

This culminating activity works perfectly as:

  • A final 10-15% evaluation
  • A performance-based assessment
  • A cross-strand review before exams

Designed to promote conceptual understanding and mathematical confidence, this task ensures students finish MHF4U Advanced Functions prepared for calculus and post-secondary mathematics.

Rigorous, engaging, and curriculum-aligned — everything you need to successfully wrap up your Advanced Functions course!
