Description

This algebra resource is a bundle of two hands-on math games that incorporate computation using positive and negative numbers. The operations of addition, subtraction and multiplication are included.

The first game, Bug Mania, provides motivation for the learner to practice addition, subtraction and multiplication using positive and negative numbers. Two different games are included in this resource. One is for addition and subtraction; the second is for multiplication. Complete instructions with a sample illustration of how to keep score for each game is included. The second game may involve subtraction with renaming and addition with regrouping based on the numbers that are used. It is a fun and engaging game that is easy to adapt to any grade level, for a whole class, or a small group of students. The games are simple to differentiate since not every pair of students must use the same cubes or have the same objective. Since the goal for each game is determined by the teacher, the time required to play varies.

The second game is called Roll and Calculate. It is a hands-on math game designed to practice adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers. Two players take turns rolling two dice numbered 1-6 and then add or subtract the numbers based on the placement on the game board. The answer must be agreed upon before the next player takes his/her turn. This game is easily made more difficult by requiring the players to use dice numbered 5-10. It is a fun and interesting way for students to review adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers without doing a “drill and kill” activity. Materials needed (two dice and the game board), complete directions, suggestions, and adaptations for the game as well as the Roll and Calculate game board are included in this resource.

The bug game required more prep than I anticipated but the dice game was super easy and fun for my 7th graders.

The Bug game does require some prep time, but once made, you can use it over and over, year after year.

Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.
Recognize opposite signs of numbers as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line; recognize that the opposite of the opposite of a number is the number itself, e.g., -(-3) = 3, and that 0 is its own opposite.
Understand signs of numbers in ordered pairs as indicating locations in quadrants of the coordinate plane; recognize that when two ordered pairs differ only by signs, the locations of the points are related by reflections across one or both axes.
