This math story problem ‘Math Journal’ focuses on: Simple Multiplication Word Problems.
Math problems can be classified into various problem types using the Cognitively Guided Instruction Approach. They are Joining, separating, comparing, whole/whole/part, multiplying, partitive division and measurement division.
WHAT’S INCLUDED?
*Cover for a journal (colored and black line)
* I can statement for journal (colored and black line)
* 5 problems on each sheet of paper so that you can print multiple copies and cut/paste into math journals. You can decrease size when you print to fit any size journal you have.
* 5 problems for Multiplication
* 5 bonus problems all on one sheet for students who need more practice. This is a total of 10 prepared practice problems.
* Blank number problems for you to add in your own numbers. This is great for differentiation.
* Blank template for you to write your own word problems
* Graphic organizer for creating your students journal
MATH INTERVENTION
Almost every student I have has a IEP goal or intervention RTI goal that relates to solving basic word problems. Do your students struggle with setting up math word problems? Do they struggle to understand what the problem is asking? As an Intervention Specialist I work with students who require specialized instruction in the area of math and learning how to solve math word problems. One of my student’s biggest struggles is how to set up the number sentence or math equation. Because of this, I teach my students how to solve math word problems by their type. I use the word problem types used in the Cognitively Guided Instruction Approach for math.
WHY JOURNAL?
Math journals give students an opportunity to practice solving math word problems on their own. These are meant to introduce one math word problem where a student uses strategies that they have previously learned to solve problems.
SUGGESTION FOR USE
You can print, cut, and paste into student notebooks. Or you can pass out strips of paper and have students get partners and discuss how they will solve. You can also use as exit slips. Personally I like to glue the cover to a regular sized notebook and have students past the word problems in horizontally. This gives them plenty of room to work and it is EASY!
