Get student notebooks set up quickly! I always glue the "Math about me" page into the front cover. The first lined page is for the table of contents, then the first side-by-side blank pages is where I put the "think like a mathematician" and "math talk" speech bubbles page.
Now, we don't want to just talk about math, we need to practice math - get them calculating!
The multiples booklet can be printed, not just as a booklet, but also as pages to glue into your composition book. I always have them create a multiplication chart for the inside back cover of their notebook. Then, working from the back of the notebook, we do multiples practice for 3-12! You probably won't finish all of this in the first week. That's fine! Get the multiples pages glued in and use it as bell work/warm up! Worried it'll take too much room? put two numbers per page!
Feel like your students don't have their multiples down as well as they should? Do a weekly multiplication chart drill! Set a 2 (or 2.5) minute timer. Students that can do it perfectly in the given time graduate from having to do it again (students reset every quarter to keep them in practice)! My goal with this is always accuracy, so I let students copy it if they don't know it. Copying quickly won't lead to assessment graduation.
