Description

Turn up the energy in your classroom with this challenging and movement-based equation-solving activity! These progressive task cards are designed to be used as a relay, giving your students meaningful practice solving equations (one step equations, two step equations, multi-step equations, and equations with variables on both sides), with increasing complexity built right in. Every problem includes negative numbers, and the difficulty gradually increases to support all learners and stretch those ready for a deeper challenge.

Perfect for collaborative work, Thinking Classroom-style lessons, or independent problem solving with movement, this low-prep activity gives students a reason to get out of their seats and think deeply about solving equations.

What’s Included:

  • Directions for Teachers (Relay Style and BTC Thin-Slicing Style)
  • Tip Sheet for Running a Successful Relay
  • 16 math problems that progress in difficulty
  • 4 optional Brain Breaks for rest or rotation resets
  • Student Recording Sheet
  • Answer Key

Problem Set Progression:

  1. One-Step Equations (with negatives)
  2. Two-Step Equations
  3. Variables on Both Sides
  4. Distributive Property & Combining Like Terms
  5. Equations with Fractions & Decimals
  6. Word Problems

How It Works:
Start your entire class on Problem 1. Place the remaining problems at a central counter or set of desks. Students solve each problem, show their work on the recording sheet, and check in before moving on to the next one. They can only move forward after getting the current problem correct. Add a competitive edge with optional prizes, or keep the focus on accuracy and perseverance.

I used this resource to review for an upcoming assessment. We following the building thinking classrooms model and students worked in groups of 3 at vertical whiteboards, as described in the teacher directions. These problems were nicely scaffolded, providing a challenge for those that finished all tasks but allowing support for those that needed it. We especially loved the included brain breaks. Thank you for making great resources! One note- I do not typically teach all groups to solve equations with variables on both sides, that is something we only cover with our advanced group. It was included in this resource.

Thank you, Brianna! It is always exciting to connect with another teacher who is trying BTC! I'm glad that your students loved the brain breaks and you found the problems appropriately scaffolded! I also don't formally teach variables on both sides to my regular 7th grade classes - it is always interesting to see who can make that leap with this progression.

There was so much enthusiasm in my room when we were doing this activity! I loved how the problems started easy and eventually got tough. Everybody was able to get some right, but I didn't have anybody solve #16! They kept trying, though. I always love to find activities and problems that encourage perseverance, and this was one of them.
