Description

Supporting language and vocabulary development is crucial in the math classroom. Educators need to explicitly teach and pay attention to the quality of talk in the classroom. English Language Learners will be supported as well as all learners. This resource will help you keep mathematicians engaged in math conversations as they become proficient in "speaking math."

Any classroom that talks about strategies and solutions to math problems will benefit from this resource...kindergarten and beyond! This makes a colorful math bulletin board display or can be incorporated in your math decor!

Includes:

- 15 blackline speech bubbles

- 5 categories of talk: explanation, agreement, disagreement, elaboration, & clarification

Quick Set-up and Use:

  • Color code the speech bubbles by the different talking points when printing (match a classroom theme or use a bright pack of paper!)
  • Affix the speech bubbles to wooden dowels or slats, rulers, or straws.
  • Place the speech bubbles in a container and pass them around to your students.

Additional Recommended Resources

SPLAT! Classroom Community MEGA Bundle: Students play four interactive games to know each better and build a positive classroom culture while practicing speaking and listening.

SPLAT! Grades 2-5 Classroom Community Bundle: Students answer two types of questions: “Would you rather…?” and open-ended questions and practice speaking and listening.

Happy Talkin'!
