Description

Word Problems Collaborative Math Tasks is a lesson plan to get students thinking about real life word problems. This lesson can be done at a variety of grade levels including grades 6, 7, 8, and 9. The sophistication of solutions for these real word tasks will increase as students are more experienced mathematicians.

Start the class period with students working in teams to collaboratively find a solution and then present their solution to the class. You could complete each task this way or just the first task.

This lesson plan is very versatile. Some options:

  • Collaborative Groups - have each group present their solution followed by a whole class debrief; discussion questions are included in the teacher notes
  • Collaborative Groups with jig sawing the tasks and then completing a gallery walk
  • Stations where students work collaboratively and you get to check in with students and get them on their way if a little encouragement is needed.
  • Feeling under the weather? This lesson plan would also work great as stations for a sub plan if you need a substitute for the day.
  • These tasks could also be used for early finishers.

This lesson plan also includes a graphic organizer for math task strategies to give to students who are having trouble getting started.
