Description

May the Fourth Math Algebra 1 Distributive Property Equivalent Expressions and Combining Like Terms 7th Grade Math Coloring Activities.

This resource is printed in black and white for the students to color in.

Notes:

Students will apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.

For example, applying the distributive property to the expression 4(2p – 3a) - 3(p - a) to produce the equivalent simplified expression.

Each answer occurs twice, once with a number and once with a color.

The matching color can then be used to color the picture in a fun color by number activity.

All answers are included.

Contents:

This resource includes:

  • 1 worksheet with 28 questions on simplifying algebraic expressions by combining like terms and using the distributive property.
  • One answer key sheet for students to fill in.
  • One color by number picture for students to color in.
  • Teachers notes.
  • All answers.

Objectives:

This resource has been designed to practice:

  • Using the distributive property with algebraic expressions.
  • Combining like terms.
  • Simplifying algebraic expressions.
  • Adding and subtracting the terms of linear expressions.
  • Identifying when two expressions are equivalent by simplifying.
  • Adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers.

Directions:

Print out the 3 pages for each student:

  • the sheet of questions
  • the answer key sheet
  • the coloring picture

Alternatively, laminate one set of questions for students to share.

Notes:

There are 28 questions.

Each answer occurs twice, once with a number and once with a color.

The matching color can then be used to color the picture in a fun color by number activity.

This activity should take around an hour to complete.

All answers are included, so you can easily mark students work.

The resource is printed in black and white for the students to color in.

Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply the distributive property to the expression 3 (2 + 𝘹) to produce the equivalent expression 6 + 3𝘹; apply the distributive property to the expression 24𝘹 + 18𝘺 to produce the equivalent expression 6 (4𝘹 + 3𝘺); apply properties of operations to 𝘺 + 𝘺 + 𝘺 to produce the equivalent expression 3𝘺.
Identify when two expressions are equivalent (i.e., when the two expressions name the same number regardless of which value is substituted into them). For example, the expressions 𝘺 + 𝘺 + 𝘺 and 3𝘺 are equivalent because they name the same number regardless of which number 𝘺 stands for.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.
