Description

Measurement (non-standard units) activity for winter or to accompany your arctic and antarctic animals unit. Print and laminate the animal cards and snowflake rulers, and provide the recording sheets for your students to record their measuring. This can be done as a "measure the room" activity by posting the images around the room, or you can scatter them around on desks/tables and have students find them. Alternately, you can place them all in a bin and have students use it as a center.

Please note, for the purpose of this activity the relative sizes of the animals may not be realistic.

I have also included a sheet for your students to measure items of their choosing. They can draw or print the name of the item they are measuring with the snowflake rulers.

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.
Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.
Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps.
