Description

Dining out means more than just enjoying a meal; understanding receipts, paying with debit card and cash, and tipping are essential life skills. This 10-day lesson unit focuses on teaching students how to read a restaurant receipt, calculate appropriate tips, and manage payments through real-world scenarios.

Students will learn to read and understand menu prices, practice calculating tip (e.g., 10%, 15%, 20%) based on the subtotal, and navigate the ordering process, including recognizing combos and substitutions and how to change an order with respect to a budget

The resource also covers using both cash and debit cards for payment, delivery fees and driver tip when ordering food online, and how to correctly complete the gratuity line on a receipt.

Students will also review common tipping etiquette in restaurants and how tipping can differ based on service quality and expectations.

***Tipping for services other than dining is covered in this resource, such as tipping a hair stylist and rideshare driver.

This unit includes practical worksheets and engaging activities designed to strengthen students’ skills in reading restaurant receipts, calculating tips, understanding menu options, and ensuring accurate payment.

By the end of this unit, students will feel more confident in making informed financial decisions when dining out (aka menu math), understanding how to handle payment processes smoothly, and navigating tipping etiquette with ease.

Created with teens and young adults in mind, students will see themselves through the questions and examples in this lesson unit.

Met expectations
Great value
It could have been my group of students, but I wish the guided listening notes were more interactive. The slides gave examples and it would have been nice to have those on the notes. I had my students write them on the back but it would have been nice on the front with the notes.
