Description
have created brand new lessons to teach computer applications for a Digital Literacy or Computer Applications class. This lesson can be used in conjunction with my Digital Literacy Unit, or on it's own in any class where you are teaching basic Microsoft Office. These lessons are MICROSOFT SPECIFIC and are not designed for Google. They are not designed to prepare students for the MOS test as they are not comprehensive enough--they are instead aimed at beginners in 6-8th grade. But they can work in any grade. This lesson is a companion to my Information Processing Cycle, Digital Communications, and Digital Citizenship lessons, and designed to teach Strand 5 in the Digital Literacy class for my state. If you'd like to see what the strand includes, you can find it here. Videos are filmed in 2019, but will work in 2016, 2021, and 365.
Included in this lesson is a lecture on Computer Applications, which comes with a video. There are no notes, as the students will demonstrate their understanding in other ways. There are two Socrative quizzes as well as the 9 lessons in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. These lessons can be done as a class or on their own using the video. The video is also great for absent students.
This download includes the following:
- 40 Slide teacher presentation in PowerPoint
- Video of the lecture with a Table of Contents, great for absent or online students
- Links and downloaded PDF's of the two quizzes
- A written assignment on Calendaring
- 4 lessons in Excel, including a starter, a key, written directions, and a silent key
- 3 lessons in Word, including a starter, key, written directions, and a silent key
- 2 lessons in PowerPoint, including a starter, key, written directions and a silent key
- All videos include an MP4 version AND the internet link that has a table of contents
- A suggested time outline for what to teach and when
Word
Lesson 1 - Takes one 45 minute period. Students format a book report, using spellcheck, margins, page numbers, title page, alignment, styles, line spacing, table of contents, page breaks, text boxes, design colors, etc.
Lesson 2 - Takes one 45 minute period. Students format a recipe, suing hyperlinks, format painter, bullets, Numbering, columns, clipping tool, wrap text, end note, insert image, etc
Lesson 3 - Takes two 45 minute periods, and can be skipped if time is short. Students create a flyer, and learn Orientation, margins, WordArt, borders, columns, tables, SmartArt, custom bullets, Shapes, Tabs, Icons, Watermark, Remove background
Excel
Lesson 1 - Takes one 45 minute period. Students format a travel itinerary. They learn to change fonts, alignment, autofill, shading, merge and center, adding and deleting rows, borders, shrink to fit, insert image, etc.
Lesson 2 - Takes one 45 minute period. Students create 6 different charts including line, bar, column, combo, and map
Lesson 3 - Takes two 45 minute periods. This is a two part assignment and is self grading. It is the only Excel assignment that also has a Google Sheets version. If time is short, you can just do part 1, which teaches how to do several functions and formulas. Part 2 is an application showing ways to use those functions and formulas. Each part takes one class period. They learn formulas, Sum, Max, Min, Average, Count, a basic IF function, and Absolute References.
Lesson 4 - Takes two 45 minute periods. This lesson is much more intense, and provides a chance to combine learning from all the other lessons into one. If it goes too deep, you can skip it depending on how much time you have. This lesson also teaches conditional formatting, text rotation, sorting, Vlookup tables, Countif and CountA.
PowerPoint
Lesson 1 - Takes 1 45 minute period. It goes over the most basic features in PowerPoint in a practice format. Teaches layout, background, new slide, text entry, transitions, animations, images, shapes, 3D models, icons, copy and paste, tables, graphs, and bullets.
Lesson 2 - Takes 2-4 45 minute periods. This is the final culminating project. I suggest you teach it live, but there is a step by step video for kids to do it on their own or use as a reference to go back to. In this lesson the students create a maze game, using advanced features in animations and triggers to make the game work. This is a very fun assignment and my students love it! If time is short, you can actually skip Lesson 1 and most kids can pick up just fine on this lesson alone. This lesson requires students to think outside the box and use their programming brain. It's always a BIG hit!
In it's entirety, this unit takes about 18 days, but can be shortened to take less, or spread out to take longer.
