PowerPoint Math Lesson

Want to help your students use models to decompose the sum of fractions into improper fractions and mixed numbers??? Less Procedures/More Critical Thinking!!!

Full 2 weeks worth of visual slides that illustrates the understanding of improper fractions and mixed numbers. Many practice slides as well for whole group, or math centers!!

This Product contains a PowerPoint Math Lesson (Chalkboard Theme). This lesson concentrates on Common Core Standard 4.NF.3.b : It is aligned to the common core standards, as well as the mathematical practices. (I Can Statement: I can decompose a sum of fractions with the same denominator to form an improper fraction or mixed number). It is designed to enhance conceptual development, critical thinking, and problem solving skills.

Included:

**25 PowerPoint Slides (Custom Made Chalkboard Theme) Great for classes that have a projector. This visual presentation is an excellent tool for all learners!!! I use it as a supplemental tool with my lesson.

**1 I CAN POSTER

*************************************************************************************************************

Math Task Cards aligned to Common Core Math Standard: 4.NF.3.b - I Can Statement: I can decompose a sum of fractions with the same denominator to form an improper fraction or mixed number. It contains 52 math questions in ALL!! (Multiple Choice, Multiple Select, Unknown Answer, Short Answer, Fill in the blank).

  1. Students will be able to rewrite a mixed number as an equivalent fraction, representing the mixed number as an addition of fractions with like denominators as opposed to a unique rote process that holds no conceptual meaning.
  2. Students will be able to decompose a fraction greater than 1 into an equivalent mixed number is a matter of decomposing the fraction into the sum of a whole number expressed as a fraction and a fraction less than 1.
  3. Students will be able to interact with contextual problems that elicit adding and subtracting fractional amounts with like denominators with rigor.
  4. Students will be able to demonstrate a strong conceptual understanding of what it means to add and subtract fractions by justifying their work with multiple types of visual fraction models including fraction tiles/bars, number lines.

When Can I use Task Cards? They can be used to introduce, reinforce, remediation, or enrich math skills!

  • Modeling Conceptual Understanding

Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. Examples: 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8.
