Description
Monomials are the building blocks of many important concepts in Algebra. Knowing how to identify them as well as add and subtract them is essential. This set of notes has been made to help students understand exactly what a monomial is and isn't, and give them practice in identifying monomial expressions. The second half of this set of notes has students focus on adding and subtracting monomials through combining like terms. This is often a necessary review for students during an exponent unit because students are tempted to alter the exponents during this process. This set of notes is best used at the beginning of an exponents unit to help students remember that they are simply combining like terms and no exponents will be changed. This resource has 24 examples included!
All examples have been thoughtfully chosen to generate discussions about misconceptions and common mistakes, and the notes themselves have been designed to fit perfectly in an interactive notebook.
Do your students need extra help with understanding exponent properties?
- This exponent rules discovery investigation will help to guide your students through deriving each of the exponent properties and will promote a more concrete understanding of why they work.
