Description

The Relative Numbers presentations give the child a concrete understanding and practice performing operations using relative numbers. Understanding the concept of relative numbers is a pre-requisite for work with exponents, squares, cubes, and algebra. It is an integral component of the math curriculum, which Montessori herself compared to the "tree that supports the parts" for the child's understanding of the concept of numeration.

The pre-requisites for this unit are the Function of the Decimal System and Operations, which can be found here:

Unit 1: Function of the Decimal Numbers System

Unit 2: Applying the Four Operations to Decimal Numbers System

The Bundle for the Function of the Decimal Numbers System can be found here (it includes a video and printable fraction pieces):
Unit 1: Function of the Decimal System BUNDLE

The presentations and command cards in this bundle are used:

  • To introduce the child to the concept of negative numbers.
  • To take the child’s consciousness the concept that it is possible to add negative and positive quantities.
  • To understand that a result of ‘addition’ can be a negative result.
  • To use positive and negative bead bars to work out a snake as a sensorial experience.
  • To use positive and negative number cards to indicate positive and negative numbers.
  • To collect similar terms and show them within one set of parentheses.
  • To bring an understanding of the work on relative numbers for algebra work.
  • To realize that it is possible to add negative and positive numbers and that the result may be a positive sum, a negative sum, or zero.
  • To understand the extracting rule with positive and negative integers.
  • To understand the rules of the products of two relative numbers.
  • To understand the rules of the quotients of two relative numbers.
  • To help further the child's passage to abstraction.

*Fraction circle pieces can be purchased separately in my store here:

Fraction Cut-out Circles for Work with Decimal System and Fractions

This bundle includes:

  • Material analysis for the Relative Snake Game
  • A series of 8 Presentations
  • 15 command cards for the four operations using relative numbers with the answers (control-of-error) on the back
  • Detailed step-by-step presentation instructions
  • Photographs and Illustrations
  • With each material analysis presentation is given the purpose, direct aim(s), indirect aim(s), control of error, and points of consciousness

This unit is useful for children from ages 8-10 years of age and up.

After the Operations (Addition, Multiplication, Subtraction, and Division) with the Relative Numbers unit, the child will be ready for work with Numerical Powers.

Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.
Recognize opposite signs of numbers as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line; recognize that the opposite of the opposite of a number is the number itself, e.g., -(-3) = 3, and that 0 is its own opposite.
Distinguish comparisons of absolute value from statements about order. For example, recognize that an account balance less than -30 dollars represents a debt greater than 30 dollars.
