Description

Teaching 4.OA.C.5 – Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Help your students begin to explore the world of patterns for "big kids!". This ready-to-use patterning resource helps you teach, assess, and differentiate the 4.OA.C.5 standard with clear teacher guidance, meaningful student practice, and built-in assessment tools.

What Makes This Resource Different

Teaching 4th grade math standards can be challenging—especially when it comes to helping students make sense of what the standard really means.

This resource breaks down 4.OA.C.5 in simple, teacher-friendly language, complete with

  • “What’s the Standard?” and “Teaching Tips” pages to help you--the teacher--unpack the concept and prepare to teach it
  • Student-friendly learning targets
  • Hands-on practice and extension activities including task cards and a critiquing reasoning activity
  • Ready-to-use assessments that make progress easy to measure

Perfect for whole-class lessons, small-group reteaching, math centers, or intervention.

What’s Included:

✔️ Standards “unpacking” page with clear, concise explanations
✔️ Teaching tips and instructional strategies
✔️ Two assessments (Forms A & B) with answer keys
✔️ 12 practice task cards at grade level
✔️ 4 differentiated challenge cards for enrichment
✔️ Recording sheets for easy accountability
✔️ Error-analysis and “Be the Teacher” critique page
✔️ Low-ink versions included

Everything you need to teach, assess, and extend understanding of more sophisticated shape and number patterning strategies—all in one resource!

Learning Focus:

Students will:

  • Get practice with different types of shape and number patterns that are written in different ways
  • Explore problems written in different formats where they both continue/extend patterns and identify patterns
  • Explain their reasoning and critique others’ thinking

Aligned to CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.OA.C.5 and easily adaptable for any standards-based curriculum.

Why Teachers Love This Series:

“This is one of the standards I struggle to teach, and this resource made it so clear. My students really got it after using the task cards and critique activity!”

“I love the ‘Be the Teacher’ page—it connects perfectly to the Standards for Mathematical Practice!”

Low-prep, high-impact, and designed to make math instruction feel organized, flexible, and effective.

Part of the Grade 4 Operations & Algebraic Thinking Series:

Each pack in this series targets one 4th grade OA standard with the same easy-to-use format:

Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 1, generate terms in the resulting sequence and observe that the terms appear to alternate between odd and even numbers. Explain informally why the numbers will continue to alternate in this way.
