Description

Looking to practice position, velocity, and acceleration graphs in your Physics classroom?  This hands-on motion graph matching activity is way more engaging than a motion graph matching worksheet. It will help students think through misconceptions and build a deeper understanding of kinematics. Students will match up a position vs. time graph, velocity vs. time graph, and acceleration vs. time graph with the story that describes that motion.

This motion graph matching activity is designed to be used during the 1D Kinematics Unit. I have used this in both Conceptual Physics and Pre-AP Physics. Students are not required to take the slope at any point. This activity is designed for building a conceptual understanding of motion graphs.

✩ HOW THIS ASSIGNMENT WORKS  ✩

  • Students cut out the motion graphs (I have included larger ones if you want to laminate a set)
  • Students will match up a position vs. time graph, velocity vs. time graph, and acceleration vs. time graph with the story that describes that motion.
  • Students will glue down their graphs on the recording sheet or in their journals. 

✩ WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW BEFORE THEY BEGIN ✩

  • A basic understanding of displacement, velocity, and acceleration.
  • How displacement, velocity, and acceleration are related.
  • Students do not need to know how to take the slope. This is a conceptual motion graph matching activity. 

✩ Easy Steps to Take AFTER Purchasing ✩

  1. Print graphs.
  2. Print student recording sheet (or use journals).
  3. Have fun!

Great activity for connecting all of the different types of motion graphs. It helped students see beyond the number values and allowed them to focus on the path of motion of an object and not get hung up on matching numbers.
