Description

Looking for a stress-free, ready-to-go sub plan that keeps your students engaged while you're away? This multi-day art lesson is perfect for elementary or even beginner middle school students and is designed to last 3–4 class periods. Whether you're out for a day or the week, this project ensures meaningful work gets done with minimal prep.

In this colorful landscape project, students will explore color mixing and layering techniques using just red, yellow, and blue markers. Starting with a tree and simple landforms like hills and mountains, they’ll fill different areas with colorful marker dots to create a layered sunset scene. Using a wet paintbrush, students blend the marker colors directly on the paper in small circular motions to discover how primary colors mix to form new ones like green and purple. The project introduces concepts like color theory, landscape composition, and painting technique—all in a fun and accessible way.

This download includes:

  • 1 - Short intro activity to introduce the concept
  • 1 - Step-by-step direction sheet written directly to students
  • 1 - Visual project example
  • 1 - Editable Project Overview to provide the sub with essential information
  • 1 - Daily sub instructions for smooth classroom management

All materials are in PDF format, with some also available as editable Publisher files so you can customize them for your classroom. Great for emergency sub plans or planned absences, this resource makes sure your students are learning and creating even when you're not there.
