Multi-digit multiplication is taught through multiple methods such as area model, partial products algorithm, and the distributive property. It is considered one of the most "challenging" concepts to teach students. The reason for this view is, in my opinion, the fact that understanding multi-digit multiplication requires students to have gained a deep understanding of place value, multiplication as a concept, and especially the distributive property.
This jumbo collection of print and digital (google slides) activities will help students practice multi-digit multiplication in many different ways. The unit includes
- Practicing 1x2, 1x3, 2x2, and 2x3-digit multiplication using the area models.
- Practicing 1x2, 1x3 2x2, and 2x3-digit multiplication using the partial products algorithm.
- Explanations, visuals, and examples.
- Puzzles/challenges with the area model for 1x2, 1x3, 2x2, and 2x3-digit multiplication.
